BBBYEG Programs and Activities
The Bold,Beautiful, and Brilliant Girls Youth Empowerment Group strives to develop middle to high school young ladies in Prince George’s County to be intellectual and innovative leaders in their community. We will focus on community advancement, leadership, financial literacy and college/career readiness, as we show love, equity, empathy, positivity and peace (LEEPP) for all.
Total Wellness - Important mental health habits include coping, resilience, and good judgment. It is important to help adolescents to achieve overall well-being and set the stage for positive mental health in adulthood. Mood swings are common during adolescence. However, one in five adolescents has had a serious mental health disorder, such as depression and/or anxiety disorders, at some point in their life. BBB creates an awareness for young adolescents to recognize when they are not feeling their best self. It is a normal part of development for teens to experience a wide range of emotions. It is typical, for instance, for teens to feel anxious about school or friendships, or to experience a period of depression following the death of a close friend or family member or other traumatic events. We will provide resources and practices to support our young adults. Teaching teenagers the importance of eating healthy and exercising is essential. More often you will find a teenager snacking on junk food rather than eating a healthy balanced meal.

Workforce Development/ Entrepreneurship - We will inform and empower our young ladies with access and information to various occupations that they may be interested in. There will be panel discussions and trips to learn about different careers paths. Our young ladies will learn about what they must do to follow the career path and be successful. We will continue to provide guidance and resources to allow our young ladies to explore career paths of their choosing.

College Readiness - College Tours and Scholarships- One of the biggest goals for BBB is to send our girls who participate in the program to college. While we know that some may decide to pursue other aspirations, we want to make going to college an option that each girl can have. BBB’s goal is to expose our young ladies to different colleges on the the East Coast.
College Tours will be yearly events and each year we will visit 3 - 4 new colleges. The colleges will rotate every 2 years which will allow for our middle school students to be exposed to countless universities/colleges. We want our girls who participate in this program to know the requirements and expectations for getting into college. We hope to set the foundation and gain resources to make that possible. |
Scholarship – The young ladies who are active participants in our program will be able to receive a $500-$1000 scholarship. The more funding we receive, the more money we can provide in scholarships. In many families, going to college can be a challenge so providing scholarships to our young ladies can assist offsetting the cost of books, meal plans, housing and/or tuition. Leadership Development - Youth Leadership Development helps our young ladies to meet the challenges of adolescence and young adulthood in order to achieve their full potential. Leadership is promoted through activities and experiences that help youth develop social, ethical, emotional, physical, and cognitive competencies. Youth leadership is apart of the youth development process and supports the young person in developing: (a) the ability to analyze their own strengths and weaknesses, set personal and career goals, and have the self- esteem, confidence, motivation, and abilities to carry them out (including the ability to establish support networks in order to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change); and (b) the ability to guide or direct others on a course of action, influence the opinions and behaviors of others, and serve as a role model (Wehmeyer, Agran, & Hughes, 1998).

Community Support - Community Support is a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. Community well-being (economic, social, environmental and cultural) often evolves from this type of collective action being taken at a grassroots level. It is important for our young ladies to understand the importance of giving back to your community. As leaders, we must look for ways to advance our communities by volunteering our time and contributing resources to help make a difference in the lives of others. Community advancement is helping to move the mission of an organization in an upward direction.

Financial Literacy – The young ladies will be introduced to finances and how to build wealth by being financially responsible. BBB wants to help our young ladies develop good financial habits at an early age - habits that will enable them to successfully make, manage, multiply, and protect their hard-earned money. When today’s teenagers reach retirement age, the availability of social security or pension benefits on which to rely may not be available. It is important for our girls to understand early on so that they can be prepared financially for the future. Learn more about this activity

Black History – Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, millions of African men and women were kidnapped and sold into slavery by white Europeans to the United States. After many years, slavery was abolished in 1865 freeing over 3 million African Americans. Although history has a way of erasing names and faces, many African Americans made huge contributions to the advancement of society and our nation. BBBYEG believes in recognizing men and women like Shirley Chisholm, Ella Baker, Robert Abbott, and Alvin Ailey who shook up the world despite their many challenges. Representation is extremely important for African American young women to see because it provides a sense of hope and encouragement to do and be whatever they want in life. Prince George's County is home to a population of 864,029 people. Sixty-three percent of that population is African American and fifty-two percent are female. We encourage thought provoking discussions with our girls about what it means to be black in America and their feelings/experiences with race, discrimination, racism, sexism, and other topics they are faced with in today's world. BBBYEG firmly believe in racial equality and through mentorship and sisterhood, we find ways to lift each other in a world that tries to keep them down.
